Daniel Hernandez is the Managing Director of the Jonathan Rose Companies Planning Practice with over 20 years of experience as a successful real estate developer and planner. Daniel’s projects represent his capacity to integrate environmental, economic, and equitable factors into all of his projects. His “systems thinking” approach includes engaging stakeholders in the planning process to create desirable and implementable solutions.

Mr. Hernandez has an intriguing portfolio of completed projects, all of which represent his capacity to work in public private partnership with government, for-profit, non-profit and institutional partners. He previously directed the Jonathan Rose Companies Development Practice and works closely with Mr. Rose to lead the Planning Practice into an international line of business.

Prior to moving to New York City, Mr. Hernandez directed one of San Francisco’s largest non-profit affordable housing development corporations and later managed the residential portfolio in the Presidio National Park for the Presidio Trust. Since moving to NYC, he has worked for regional and national developers, and established his own planning and development firm.

While at Jonathan Rose Companies, Mr. Hernandez has led various large-scale projects. He has worked on HUD Mixed-Finance developments and authored EPA Smart Growth policy and planning reports.  As an urban planner, he is creating the City of Newark, NJ master plan, and serves as the town planner for Morristown, NJ.  He is presently establishing a public private partnership policy for the development of affordable housing in São Paulo, Brazil.  As a thought leader and planner, he is working with NYU-Polytechnic to plan and implement a transformative capital plan for its expanding urban campus.

His redevelopment experience brings strong expertise to feasibility analysis and implementation planning for catalytic projects in neighborhoods and districts. Daniel applies enthusiasm and leadership, with his honed skills in project management, to create sound, place-making projects in close collaboration with clients.

Mr. Hernandez is a frequent lecturer, has taught at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, and is currently on faculty at the Pratt Institute. He often participates on the Mayor’s Institute on City Design, Affordable Housing Design Leadership Institute, and more recently, the Governor’s Institute on Community Design and Redevelopment. He was a USGBC Core Committee member responsible for the LEED Neighborhood Development rating system.

He completed his studies in architecture at the UCLA School of Architecture and Urban Planning, and is a Loeb Fellow at Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
