These are sites we use often in our work, and suggest you may find them useful too. They contain information on sustainable development, preservation, urban design, ecology, and many other topics. We've tried to include a short explanation of each to give you a sense of why we're making the suggestion. If there is a site we don't list that you think we should, please suggest a website.

The Greyston Foundation

The Enterprise Foundation

The National Trust for Historic Preservation

The Trust marked its 50th anniversary in 1999. Trust for Public Land

Founded in 1972, the Trust for Public Land is the only national nonprofit working exclusively to protect land for human enjoyment and well-being. TPL helps conserve land for recreation and spiritual nourishment and to improve the health and quality of life of American communities.

TPL's works with landowners, government agencies, and community groups to: create urban parks, gardens, greenways, and riverways; to build livable communities by setting aside open space in the path of growth; to conserve land for watershed protection, scenic beauty, and close-to-home recreation; to safeguard the character of communities by preserving historic landmarks and landscapes.

The Kresge Foundation

The Kresge Foundation, one of the largest foundations in the country with assets of over $2 billion, has started a Green Building Initiative, aimed at "creating awareness among nonprofit organizations that they too can build green." The initiative includes educational materials, which can be downloaded from the Kresge Web site, in addition to challenge grants to fund the planning of green building projects. Nonprofit organizations, including government and religious groups, are eligible for the grants. Grants will typically range from $50,000 to $100,000, according to the Kresge Foundation.

This organization, dedicated to "Building Alternative Visions for the City," publishes "The Neighborhood Works," an award-winning, bimonthly magazine that covers community approaches to housing, organizing, economic development, transportation and the environment.

First Nations Development Institute

First Nations Development Institute was founded in 1980 to help tribes build sound, sustainable reservation economies. First Nations helps tribal members mobilize enterprises that are reform-minded, culturally suitable and economically do-able. Their strategy coordinates local grass roots projects with national program and policy development to build capacity for self-reliant reservation economies.

The Conservation Fund

International Society for Ecology and Culture (ISEC)

The International Society for Ecology and Culture (ISEC) is a non-profit organization that promotes locally based alternatives to the global consumer culture. Their emphasis is on education for action: moving beyond single issues to look at the more fundamental influences that shape our lives. Zipcar is an environmentally responsible company with a mission: to offer members affordable 24-hour access to private vehicles for short-term round-trip use as an efficient means of complementing the public transportation network.

Their vision is for every urban resident to have a transit pass and a Zipcard. These, coupled with feet and bicycle wheels, should meet the transportation needs of every urban dweller. Imagine cities with few private vehicles: Zipcars parked on every block; no need for reservations. You'd walk up to a Zipcar, unlock it with your Zipcard, and go! Developed by a team led by the Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems of Austin, Texas, sponsored by the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE), and funded by the Merck Family Fund, the guidelines "provide the healthcare sector with a self-certifying metric tool that designers, owners, and operators can use to evaluate their progress towards high performance healing environments."
